Long before its automotive debut, Kia started making bicycle parts in the mid-1940s as Kyungsung Precision Industries. Credited with building Kia's first domestic bicycle in 1951, the company changed its name to Kia Industries the same year and set out to expand its operations. Next, Kia started building motorcycles and turned its attention to automobiles in the 1970s. Opening its first automotive production facility in 1974, Kia unveiled its first passenger car, the Brisa, shortly after.
Production of the Brisa came to a halt in the 1980s when government shutdowns forced Kia to focus its efforts on building light-duty trucks.
