The Best Used Kia Sorento to Buy

The Best Used Kia Sorento to Buy

A black 2020 Kia Sorento is shown from the front.

When you think of an SUV, you might think of massive vehicles with poor fuel economy and clunky maneuverability. But the Kia Sorento defies these stereotypes. It's a three-row SUV with elegant body lines, easy handling, and a lot to love inside. This SUV offers tremendous value, especially when purchased used, which is why we're proud to be a used Kia Sorento dealer.

There have been several generations of the Kia Sorento, and with each one, we've seen upgrades in some of the expected areas like driver assist and infotainment. However, we particularly like the 2016-2018 third-generation models for drivers seeking excellent value for their dollar. After that, the refreshed 2019-2020 Sorento is also an exciting option for used car buyers looking for something that resembles the newest models but at a pre-owned price.

We know there are many competitors in the three-row SUV category, but we believe the 2016-2020 Kia Sorento will really impress drivers with features that were ahead of their time, luxury materials, and impressive performance, all for a fair price. Here at Sherwood Kia, we have a sales team that is well-versed in all of the used Kia Sorento models we sell and a finance team that makes it easy to get behind the wheel of a used car you love at a price you'll leave even more. Here's a look at what you can get in a 2016-2018 Sorento, as well as the 2019 model year refresh.

A Quick Look At Trims

The 2016-2018 Kia Sorento comes in several trim levels, including the LX, LX+, EX, EX+, SX, SX+, and SXL, although every trim isn't available for every year. The lower-end trims offer good performance and standard safety features. As you move up the line, you start to see more upscale materials in the cabin, more advanced safety features, and some luxury features that make the drive more pleasant. Some trims will even have quieter cabins than others (something to consider for parents who want little ones to nap in the car).

Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models are available throughout the trims. If one of these is important to you, check with us about which used Kia Sorento from this generation offers the drive you're after. As for seating, the Kia Sorento can seat up to seven passengers. There are two seating configurations, and on some trims, you can opt for second-row captain's chairs, offering more comfort for second-row passengers.

Engine Options

There are a few engine options offered for the 2016-2018 Sorento. These give drivers with different needs for speed and power a range of choices. These engine options include:

  • A 2.4L four-cylinder with 185 hp
  • A 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 hp
  • A 3.3L V6 with 290 hp

Drivers looking for the most fuel-efficient option should consider the base 2.4L engine. It won't be as powerful as the V6, but if you drive long stretches and need to save on fuel, the smaller engines are the way to go. However, if you're looking for a bit more kick out of your Sorento, opt for the V6. That said, the turbocharged 2.0L option will give you more power than the 2.4L without sacrificing as much fuel efficiency as the V6, making it the perfect compromise for many drivers.

Safety Features

The 2016-2018 Kia Sorento has a great lineup of standard and available safety features. Over these three years, Kia transitioned some features from being optional on some trims to being standard, as well as offering some features as options to trims that didn't previously receive them. These features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert. By 2018 models, most of these features will be standard on upper trims like the EX and SX.

Special Features

There are various high-end features found throughout the trims of this generation. Our sales team would be happy to show you which Sorentos have the features you're looking for. Some include an Infinity stereo (great for audiophiles and podcast lovers) as well as multimedia connectivity, giving you several ways to enjoy your entertainment. Back-up cameras are also available for safer backing out of driveways, as well as a power tailgate for easy loading of the trunk.

Depending on the trim, you can find a variety of luxury features in this Kia SUV. Leather seating comes standard on the EX trim and above, along with a 14-way power driver seat. Dual-zone automatic temperature control is also standard on all trims above the LX+. On the lower trims, you'll find cloth seats instead of leather, but heated front seats come standard.

The 2019 Kia Sorento

In 2019, Kia showcased a refreshed Sorento that was distinctly more sophisticated than the previous generation and boasted some exciting new features that launched it into what we now consider a modern-day vehicle. It still boasts the just over 2,000 kg towing capacity for which this three-row SUV is known, and many of the options and safety features found in the 2016-2018 models. But there were some upgrades that made this a much more luxurious option.

A New Look and Feel

The 2019 Kia Sorento came out with thinner headlights, redesigned tail lights, a new tailgate and new wheel designs. The resulting vehicle looks upscale and cosmopolitan. As for the interior, it's still a seven-seater, with a 40/20/40 split-folding second row and 50/50 split-folding third row, allowing for multiple cargo configurations that make it ready to take that bicycle or those large suitcases at a moment's notice.

The infotainment system really shines on this used Sorento, closely mimicking what you see on the newer models today. This includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, available wireless charging for select iPhones and Androids (ask our sales team about your phone's compatibility for this feature), and a redesigned instrument cluster with crisper graphics. Even the steering wheel and shifter knob look elevated in this model.

For drivers who travel long stretches without pulling over, it's worth noting that the 2019 Sorento gets the addition of power lumbar support on the front seats on select upper trims. And for audiophiles, premium trims get a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. All in all, luxury-level attention to detail can be found throughout the 2019 model, but at its core, it features the reliability and great performance of the previous generation.

A Few More Upgrades

Safety Feature Additions

The 2019 Sorento builds upon the previous generation's driver-assist features. So expect those, plus driver attention warning––a highly advanced system that detects driver fatigue and suggests when it's time to pull over.

Transmission Upgrades

The 2.4-litre four-cylinder is still the standard engine on the Sorento for 2019, but it gets an all-new six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.3-litre V6 is also available, and it enjoys an all-new eight-speed transmission that offers smoother shifts and improved fuel efficiency.

Enjoy a Smooth Ride at a Great Price

The Kia Sorento has been a popular three-door SUV ever since Kia introduced it. It filled a gap in the market, delivering a spacious SUV that manages to look stylish and handle easily. It's an excellent family vehicle that delivers great value. When you purchase a used Kia Sorento, you can see significant savings. The Kia has gone through a number of changes throughout the years, but we really like the 2016-2018 generation and the 2019 refresh.

We know infotainment and driver-assist features have advanced rapidly across the car industry in recent years, setting a new standard for what drivers expect out of their vehicles. The 2016-2020 Kia Sorento models are on the newer side, so they live up to the needs of many drivers and can almost compete with the newer Kia Sorentos. However, because they are used, we have many at great prices. Some still have low mileage and are in pristine condition. Contact us and let our sales team show you our selection of used Kia Sorentos. We know their features and functions well and can walk you through finding the perfect SUV for your life.
